CLIMATE SOLUTIONS

The entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol explicitly recognises the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and establishes binding instruments to address the issue. With the EU introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme and climate change set as a priority issues for the UK G8 chair and EU presidency this year, there is no better time for a concerted effort to deliver solutions.

There have been more extreme and frequent weather events in the past decade, claims for storm and flood damage in the UK alone from 1998 – 2003 total £6 billion.

Investment of around $16 trillion will be needed from 2003-2030 in order to meet the world’s energy demand, without additional energy efficiency measures to reduce demand, both world energy demand and CO2 emissions are projected to increase by around 60% by 2030. These measures combined with a largescale shift to renewable energy are a global imperative.

Building environmentally sustainable, resource efficient and technically robust buildings will continually shape our present and future with the UK government seeking to introduce a Sustainable Buildings Code as well as proposed amendments to Building Regulations benchmarked against the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. With technological innovation at the fore Fuel cells and Hydrogen is a new high technology growth industry with a market expected to be worth $29 billion worldwide by 2011.

In its powering future vehicles strategy, the UK Government has set a target for carbon emission reductions from the transport sector of 60% by 2050. To achieve this target we need to shift to clean low carbon vehicles and fuels while maximising the economic, social and environmental benefits. All these new business growth opportunities present a large potential as the global market for environmental goods and services is currently worth $515billion and predicted to reach $690billion annually by 2010.

This conference is designed to help engage decision makers on delivering climate change solutions. The time is right for business, science and the public sector to work in partnership to deliver solutions and take advantage of the greatest business opportunity since the industrial revolution.
