Distributed Energy

The UK generates most of its electricity in large coal, gas or nuclear power stations which are connected to the national grid. Distributed Energy (DE), also referred to as distributed generation or decentralised energy, is another which brings generation closer to where it is used. It covers many technologies which may be installed by individuals, businesses, communities, schools, commerce or industry. DE could be anything from wind power, solar panels, combined heat and power (CHP) schemes and other renewable electricity generation connected directly into the local distribution network. CHP uses largely conventional generation technology but captures the heat usually lost through generation to use in industrial processes or heating / cooling. Ofgem/BERR consultation with the aim of removing barriers to the wider uptake of DE. (BERR, 18 December 2007)

Decentralised & Intelligent Energy Services Network (DIESN)

The DIESN is a cross-sector network for stakeholders in the growing area of distributed generation (DG) and energy services providing low-carbon energy, water, waste and transport services using ESCos, DG and resource efficiency.

The DIESN instigates and delivers a programme of seminars, conferences, workshops and a dedicated data base of public, private and third sector stakeholders. This was built on the platform of previous conferences and affiliation with forums and related initiatives; Climate Change Solutions Ltd affiliation with the World Alliance for Decentralised Energy - best practice globally providing additional assistance for UK implementation. Other activities of this network include relevant up-date information and advisory services.
